Mary and Gene sailed from Queens, New York to the Virgin Islands originally in 1977 and then returned to St. Thomas in 1980 on their 45 ft gaff-rigged schooner. Gene started his woodworking business in Yacht Haven and soon realized the necessity for more marine services for the many yachts coming from all over the world. St. Thomas is still considered the “Crossroads” of the yachting world with vessels sailing to and from the US Coast, Europe, Down Island, South America and through the Panama Canal to the Pacific.
He started his marine repair company in 1981 with a small crane and 3 employees in the same Subbase location and slowly built the company over a 35 year span. The current drydocks were built in Staten Island, New York in 2009 and St. Thomas in 2012.
Subbase Drydock is located on the south side of St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands in the area known as Subbase. The facility is adjacent to the Crown Bay Cruiseship dock and has deep water approaches. Our 1200 Ton and 350 Ton drydocks can haul vessels up to 225 feet in length.
We have worked with local and stateside vendors for 35 years and we can procure standard and specialty parts in two days. If we cannot locate a part, our machinists can fabricate it.
We are three minutes from the airports with direct flights to and from Miami, New York, Boston, Charlotte, Fort Lauderdale and D.C. We are three minutes from Crown Bay Marina and 10 minutes from Yacht Haven Grande.
Subbase Drydock services ferries, tugboats, private yachts, charter yachts and cargo boats.
Your crew has the option to remain onboard while the vessel is drydocked or stay at your choice of two hotels or a lovely guesthouse all within a five minute drive.
